Olive oils schools in the Mediterranean

Festivaldelgusto along with their partner Olivaverde are always interested in promoting small food, wine and olive oil producers from the Mediterranean region and are pleased that in 2014 we are launching a series of dedicated olive oil schools in Italy and the Islands of Malta and Gozo. The "schools" will include workshops where there will be an olive oil producer teaching clients about all the stages of  the cultivation and production of fine extra, from the harvesting of the olives right through to the bottling and marketing of the oils.
Other classes will include talks and demonstrations by actual olive oil producers and tasting experts where our clients will learn the techniques of tasting olive oils from different regions of Italy and also from the Island of Malta. Clients will also visit the olive groves and mills where the olive oils we feature are produced to see how the different olive oils are made, where possible all the olive oils used and promoted in our "schools" will be made by organic or biodynamic agricultural and horticultural methods and produced by small artisan producers.

Several courses at the schools will be available, the basic course lasting a day with other more intensive courses lasting two or possibly three days.
The one day course will cover all the basics of olive cultivation and oil production, while the two and three days courses will also include visits to the olive producers groves and mills as well as more intensive talks and workshops on olive oil varieties and production and marketing techniques.
The schools will initially be located in the Marche region of eastern Italy, the first in the beautiful southern Le Marche town of Ripatransone, but we also have other producers who will be hosting our schools at venues at or near their olive mills in Puglia, Umbria, Sicily and possibly Tuscany.
All our tutors at the pop up schools will either be olive oil producers themselves or professionals closely involved in the olive oil industry and all will be fully qualified in leading tasting and oil appreciation classes.

Malta is also an interesting place to hold pop up olive oil schools as olive oil has been made their for many thousands of years, but unfortunately over the last few centuries and the second world war most of the olive trees on the island were rooted out and burnt. But in the past ten years many indigenous olive tree varieties have been replanted on the Island and once again find extra virgin olive oils have started to be produced in reasonable quantities.
We now have several small producers on Malta and one on the Island of Gozo who are working with us on plans for our first olive oil schools there next summer, as well as helping us with our ongoing plan of the Festivaldelgusto event on the Islands in May next year.

Malta Food Event in December

Festivaldelgusto are very pleased to be working on an exciting new event in Malta this December held together with MCA , the Mediterranean Culinary Academy and several Slow Food groups from Italy and other Mediterranean countries. We have been planning to hold an organic and sustainable food event in Valletta the capital of Malta since the Slow Food Mediterranean conference in Valletta last October. The event will mainly be aimed toward promoting small artisan producers from around the Mediterranean region as well as representatives from many of the countries taking part. During the day there will be a series of workshops, talks and pop up street food stands as well as a dedicated kitchen where chefs can prepare dishes which are typical of their home countries. It is hoped that the event can be held outside in the streets close to the beautiful Hastings Gardens, but if this is not possible because of the weather in December then it will be relocated to an indoor venue in another part

Festivaldelgusto at Gusto Italia

Festivaldelgusto are very pleased to be one of the participants with Slow Food Anglia at the prestigious Italian food and drink event, the   Gusto Italia  which is held on November 7th and 8th at the Sheraton Hotel, Park Lane in central London. As part of our ongoing commitment to our friends and clients in Italy we are attending the event to build on the very close links we now have with Sicilian and mainland Italian olive oil producers, chefs and artisan food businesses. We will also strengthen our ties that we now have built up with Olivaverde, Slow Food Anglia, Slow Food Sicilia and Slow Food groups in Italy. Carmelo Carnevale the Sicilian chef who is responsible for organising Gusto Italia has personally invited Slow Food Anglia members and they have included us in their stand at the event. Carmelo came to Norwich to take part in our joint Festivaldelgusto and Slow Food Anglia festival we held there in August and he also met with our partners at Olivaverde at that event and sam
